API 1169
The API 1169 is a recommended practice that focuses on the basic requirements needed to do inspection on new onshore pipelines in a safe manor. Broken in to four sections. Inspector responsibilities; making sure the project moves forward in a safe and efficient manor. Inspector in responsible for planning, monitoring, evaluating, and root cause analysis. Personal and General Pipeline Safety; Making sure the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926 are met. Environmental and pollution control; Inspectors must know the local, state, and federal permits for Environmental and Pollution control. Basic understanding of the impacts that pipelines have on of water, land and air. General Pipeline Construction; Observing all phases of construction and understanding the difference between compliance and requirements in term on general pipeline construction.
ASNT; American Society for Nondestructive testing
A nonprofit organization which is governed by a board of directors. ASNT publishes and maintains SNT-TC-1A, Standards, Codes of practice, ANSI/ASNT CP-189 and CP-105. They also cover all aspects of qualification and certification of NDT personnel. Founded in 1919 the American Welding Society (AWS) is a nonprofit organization that is made up of members and panels of members. They are yearly contributing to advancing the science, technology, and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes worldwide, including brazing, soldering and thermal spraying. Many well-known certifications come from AWS. The CWI or Certified Welding Inspector is one of them. Eddy Current uses electromagnetic induction with alternating currents passed through a coil. The coil produces alternating magnetic field. Used extensively in the aircraft industry and manufacturing industry to look for surface and subsurface defects. Also used in the Nuclear and Petro chemical industry on heat exchanger tubing. When the surface is properly cleaned Eddy Current (ET) can be a fast and very effective Nondestructive inspection.
Newville Drone Inspection
Using drones is quickly becoming a common inspection method. The biggest attraction is offering a safe way to inspect confined spaces and inspected areas high in the air. With todays advanced cameras they are capable of doing a very good visual inspection. Some drones offer infrared capabilities. This allows the operator to look for hot or cold spots on equipment, structures or solar panels. Smaller drones make for good options to investigate or inspect confined spaces. Larger drones are capable of using or deploying Ultrasonics to perform thickness readings on hard to reach places. To use a drone for commercial purposes the operator must have a FAA license.
